Most food allergy families spread awareness wherever they go, no matter the day, week or setting; we are happy to share information with you. But it is nice to have a week designated to our cause, May 8-14, 2016. Food Allergy Awareness Week (FAAW) was first declared in 1998 by the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, which is now FARE. This year, both the governor and our county mayor signed proclamations recognizing FAAW in Tennessee and Shelby County. It feels good to have local support and recognition. This year's theme is "React with Respect" and I appreciate the emphasis on taking food allergies seriously and the role that we can all play in protecting those with allergies around us. FAAM also hosted the first awareness week event in the MidSouth on Monday. The kiddos loved our food allergy superhero theme and dressed in their favorite superhero costumes. Everyone walked the teal carpet for the "mommarazzi" and made an awareness craft. We watched Kyle Dine & Friends on the big screen. The children loved the puppets and dancing to the songs. I was surprised to hear the younger children answering questions even before Kyle did, that showed the parents that our food allergy education at home is working. We also had great giveaways. The best part was simply letting our kids play in a place where we did not have to worry about their allergens and we could enjoy talking and getting to know each other. Let us know how you helped raise awareness this week!
